3D Printing FAQs: Answering Your Most Common Questions

frequently asked questions about 3d printing and 3d printed products from ryan does 3d

We get it—3D printing still feels a bit like magic to most people. Whether you’re buying your first 3D printed item or just curious about how it all works, you’re not alone. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about our products, the process, and what makes 3D printed goods so special.

What exactly is 3D printing?

3D printing is a process of creating physical objects from a digital design. Think of it like a high-tech version of icing a cake—but instead of frosting, we’re using eco-friendly plastic to build up layers that form a solid object. It allows us to create detailed, customised designs you won’t find on the high street.

What material do you use?

We primarily use PLA, a plant-based, biodegradable plastic made from renewable resources like corn starch. It’s strong, lightweight, and doesn’t give off harmful fumes like other plastics. Bonus, it’s better for the environment and looks great too.

Are your products safe and durable?

Yes! PLA is non-toxic and safe for everyday use. Our items are designed for decorative and practical use around the home and are built to last. That said, avoid exposing them to extreme heat or direct sunlight for long periods, as this can weaken the material over time.

Why do some products have layer lines?

Layer lines are a natural part of the 3D printing process. They’re formed as the printer builds up the object layer by layer. While we take great care to ensure our prints are smooth and high quality, these subtle lines are part of the charm—and proof that every item is individually made.

Do you paint or finish the items?

Some of our products are left in their raw, natural colour for a modern and minimal look. Others may be hand-painted or finished, depending on the design. Each listing on our shop will tell you exactly what to expect.

Can I customise a product?

Yes! We love personalising items, whether it’s a name, colour, or small design tweak. Just drop us a message and we’ll let you know what’s possible. Because everything is made to order, we can usually accommodate most requests.

How long does it take to make and ship my order?

Our standard turnaround time is 2–5 business days for printing, followed by shipping via Royal Mail. If it’s a larger or custom order, we’ll let you know if it takes a bit longer. You’ll receive tracking info as soon as it’s on its way.

Do you ship internationally?

Absolutely! We’re based in the UK but ship worldwide. Delivery times will vary depending on your location, but we always pack your items securely and ship with care.

Are 3D printed products eco-friendly?

Yes and we’re proud of it. PLA is a biodegradable plastic, and because we print on demand, there’s very little waste. Plus, by supporting a small business like ours, you’re choosing a more conscious, handmade alternative to mass production.

I’ve never bought a 3D printed product before. What should I expect?

Expect something special! Each product is unique, full of character, and made with intention. You might notice small variations or texture marks—these aren’t flaws, but signs of craftsmanship. 3D printing blends technology and creativity, and no two items are exactly alike.

Do you accept returns?

We want you to love what you order. If there’s ever a problem with your item, please get in touch so we can make it right. For more details, check out our Returns Policy.
